Ria, Ria, Hungaria

Travelling is a need for human being. People should travel and see other countries and people. For Europeans travel is a part of life; they raise their children this way too. On the contrary, we Iranians do not travel. Instead, we prefer to increase the number of our flats or renew our car. We should teach our children to travel in Iran and the world to learn and grow up.

In September 2011 when I was still single, I received a message from a Hungarian member of couchsurfing website named Géza informing that he would travel to Iran soon and requesting the possibility of being hosted by me during his stay in Tehran. His interest in football was obvious from the first message as he wanted to go to Azadi stadium on the day of his arrival in Tehran and watch the derby match between Esteghlal and Persepolis. I accepted his request and he appeared on the agreed day but it was too late for stadium and we watched the game on TV. His interest in football and his knowledge about Iranian teams was interesting for me. After a few days in Tehran and a short visit to Isfahan he returned to Hungary. Before departure he invited me to visit his country once in the future. He gave me a post card with image of Danube River at night which was always on the wall of my home in front of my eyes. But I never thought that I might see that landscape in reality very soon. We were in constant contact and once a while he asked about my plan of visiting Hungary. I always replied: “I’ll come” until I was employed by the Hungarian Embassy Tehran in January 2013. Being in the Hungarian embassy and working with Géza’s countrymen strengthened my incentives to see his country. Finally I decided to realize the long awaited plan in September 2013 with my wife Samaneh. After comparing the prices of airline companies, we finally agreed again on Turkish Airlines and decided to take off on 08 September.  The main destination of this trip was Hungary but with Samaneh’s insistence on “now that we go there, let’s see Austria too” we decided to spend few days in Vienna too. Apart from Géza who had promised since two years ago to host me in Budapest, I didn’t think of other host and was planning to reserve hotel but my mind changed later. I said to myself: “Why not? Am I not a couchsurfing member?” I started then to search unknown hosts in Vienna and Budapest. Positive responses started to come very soon. We wanted to stay in Vienna totally for 4 days. To see the city from two different aspects we divided the surfing (staying) between two hosts; 2 days each one in the beginning and the other in the end of the trip. In Budapest we wanted to stay for 7 days. Géza accepted 4 days. For the remaining 3 days, a middle age lady named Edith accepted to host us. Except Géza, our knowledge about our hosts was limited to information and photos on their profile pages in the couchsurfing website and also comments of others about them. Comments were full of compliments those who couched/surfed by/in them in the past.

Traveling as a married person is naturally different from that of a single type. With Samaneh, deciding about unknown hosts in Vienna and Budapest and staying in their homes was not easy. I was worried something unpleasant to happen which couldn’t be tolerated by Samaneh. The worry accompanied me until the day we met our hosts.

Quite accidently there happened a 7-hours gap between our Tehran-Istanbul and Istanbul-Vienna flights which we used in the best possible way. I informed our Turk friends whom we met two years ago in Istanbul. Ercüment on behalf of three of them replied: “We’ll all be in the airport on the 8thSeptember in the morning”. Our one-week visit to them two years ago was fabulous. We were in constant contact since then and our friendship was untouched. On 8thSeptember 2013 at 07:20 we landed on Istanbul’s Sabina Gökçen Airport. This airport is in the Asian side of Istanbul. Sabiha Gökçen was the first female pilot in Turkey whose name’s nomination on the airport has still critics in Turkey. The reason is bombardment of Turkey’s Kurdish region by this pilot woman. We left the airport and started to search for our friends. After a little wandering around, Samaneh showed Alp to me. His eyes were in the search mode with Hilal (Ercüment’s wife) beside him. She was covered in red and looked younger than 2 years ago. Alp had not changed and his appearance looked teenager-type. Our friendship started first with him when we met in couchsurfing website. Like Géza, he invited himself to my home in 2010. He sent a short message asking for few days stay in my place. I accepted and he came with Ercüment. In 2011 I was their guest with Samaneh; a trip which ended with our marriage. They definitely had a role in our marriage.

Alp

We kissed and hugged Alp and Hilal and went to Ercüment who was looking for a place to park his car. Meeting them overwhelmed us with joy. We got on Ercüment’s car and got down beside a big complex near Marmara Sea full of clean and nice tables. Ercüment had selected the place for breakfast but service was due to start from 10 a.m. so we had a good opportunity to tell each other of last two years and renew our friendship.

During the few hours, we wanted to tell each other of everything; work, family, baby and of course politics. Like us, our Turk friends do not like Erdoğan and his policies. I reminded Ercüment of their prime minister’s last masterpiece in which he recommended Turkish families to have at least 3 children each. Ercüment said: “Didn’t you know that he’s our father now; engaging in all our lives?” Our few hours meeting and conversation passed by like thunder and wind. We were not satiated of seeing them but it was time to go.

We were in Vienna airport in the afternoon that day. Before landing and from the airplane, landscape of Danube River among thick adjacent forests was spectacular. Using the instructions of our unknown Austrian friend, we took metro train in the airport and headed toward his home. We bought metro ticket from automatic seller machines but nobody was controlling them.

Vienna Airport-Metro Station

Our friend’s name was Michi which is shortened of Michael. The station is close to his home and he had promised to come to the station to take us. Before the trip, I had downloaded maps of Vienna’s public transportation network from the internet. By changing the train in one of the stations we reached Michi’s station on due time. I recognized him from inside the train. From the very first encounter he received us very politely and welcomed us. We were in his home in 10 minutes. From his behaviour it was apparent that he knew couchsurfing principle. Although quite odd for a single man but his small flat was tidy and orderly. He said he was living with a girlfriend until recently but they didn’t agree about some issues including inviting foreign guests and separated in the end. The discipline and order in the flat was perhaps something left from her. Michi works in a flooring producing company (or something like that). On the wall of living room there are photos of his guests from different countries including USA, Lebanon, Colombia, South Africa etc. He took our photo to add it to his gallery.

Michi

Talking to Michi with his fluent English was pleasant. During the very short time we

had, we talked of everything from everywhere as far as possible. The goal was, knowing each other. Exhausted but eagerly we were asking questions from each other. Answering the questions patiently he seemed a knowledgeable person. Michi has travelled to USA, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Italy, Germany, England, France and Croatia and wants to see more countries. He has a simple quiet life. In his words, there was no sign of the disgusting dreams of the Iranian youth today. He neither talked about the prices of expensive cars nor of quick ways of getting rich. We had arrived in the correct address.

Michi uses underground to get to work every day. His vehicle is an enviable racing bicycle parked inside the flat. We were tired of the trip and he of the work. Our pleasant conversation couldn't last long. Michi gave us his bedroom and slept on the sofa in the living room.

He left home before us in the morning and left the spare keys for us. We headed directly toward city centre whose historic monuments have turned it to an open museum. The word Vienna is pronounced by Austrians like "win" in the stretched form. It's a modern city with an atmosphere very similar to German cities. People have a special accent distinguishing them from Germans.

Not to be behind other tourists, we headed directly toward Vienna's most important historic monument i.e. St. Stephen’s Cathedral. It’s a magnificent Gothic church from 13th century which can been seen in Vienna nearly from everywhere. There is a big square in front of it with the same name. In the middle of the square guys in old-style dresses of the early years since building the church, persuade tourists to buy tickets and visit inside the church. We were not persuaded but returning to Iran one of my colleagues who has been in Vienna and visited the church told me: “Half of your life is wasted!” (Iranian proverb).Tiny statues and designs on the outer part of St. Stephen’s façade and colourful tiles on the rooftop have made a miniature monument out of cathedral.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral

St. Stephen’s Cathedral

Streets around St. Stephen’s Cathedral are very chic and modern. Some of them are closed to cars and people enjoy walking in them. Famous shops show off with their expensive brands. Pleasure of walking around in these streets and shops was not less than seeing the church.

Next destination was Hofburg Royal Palace about which we had read a lot. But before that and on the way there from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, we decided to try famous Austrian strudel cake. Samaneh ate it with tilted mouth and eyes. For me, it was the world's best strudel.

Strudel

From St. Stephen’s Cathedral to Hofburg Royal Palace it's about 15-20minutes walking. The palace has been erected by Habsburg Empire in 13thcentury too and many buildings have been added to it later. Interestingly, Austria’s president today resides in one of these buildings. Also Austria’s National Library and CC's (famous queen of Emperor Franz Joseph) Jewellery Museum is located in Hofburg.

Hofburg

Like everywhere in the city, there are statues in Hofburg whose beauty is fascinating.

In Vienna specially in touristic sites, Austrian flags are erected in a beautiful way.

Like all my foreign trips, my Iranian flag bold and big enough to pierce the eyes of those who do not tolerate it, was with me everywhere on my back sack.

Before the trip, one of my friends who has lived in Vienna for 3 months told me that Vienna's public transportation system is unique but hearing is never like seeing. To make it sure, it's enough to be there for 2days. Everything is on time, in order and with discipline. Nobody controls the ticket but everybody buys ticket. Michi said he buys annual ticket and this year has been controlled 3 or 4 times so far. Controls are done randomly. People usually buy monthly or annual tickets. Those without ticket are heavily fined so they prefer not to put themselves into trouble. During our 4 days visit to Vienna we bought two 48-hour tickets for 12.4 EUR each but nobody asked us for them. It was somehow ridiculous for us; nobody wanted ticket and we bought it.

That day Michi arrived home later than the previous day. There was little time for conversation and we were getting prepared to leave to Budapest in the morning. He had some information about Iran, its history and present government. We asked him to visit Iran in the future to see them all directly. He said it's not possible in 2 or 3 years but he’ll add Iran to the list of countries he'd like to visit.

With Michi

Next day we went to Vienna’s Meidling station to go to Budapest by Austrian National Railway Company’s Rail Jet trains. We paid 39 EUR each for tickets which had been purchased online by Michi before our arrival. It was a modern and well-equipped train that had started its journey from Munich toward the last destination (Budapest). Wireless internet was one of its services. Free internet is accessible in most places in Austria. On the way to Budapest forests were changing little by little and getting thinner and thinner. After about 2 hours 45 minutes we were in Budapest’s Keleti station. Géza had promised to pick us. He appeared after a few minutes. His face is quite Iranian type. Two years ago in Tehran and in our first meeting when I opened the door for him, I was not sure if to speak English or Persian because he didn’t look like a foreigner at all.

With Géza in Budapest’s Keleti Station

We went to Géza’s home by metro. Metro stations in Budapest are located much deeper into the ground compared to those in Tehran. For this reason they only have electric elevators and there is no sign of ordinary steps. They couldn’t be of use if there was any. Escalators move with high speed. I had seen the similar one in Baku (Azerbaijan). They have apparently been designed all by engineers of Comrade Stalin.

Budapest Metro

Géza’s home is near the city centre about 5 minutes walking to the nearest metro station. From home’s appearance it was easy to understand that inhabitants are single. Rooms were full of books. Géza is originally from Győr located in eastern Hungary close to the Austrian border. We crossed his hometown by train on the way to Budapest. His sister arrived soon later.

Before the trip, Géza had promised us watching a live football match in the stadium. That night Hungarian national team was playing a 2014 world cup qualifying match against Estonia. Géza had bought tickets for all and we left home after a little rest. Before departure and during a ceremony with participation of me, Géza and Samaneh presented Géza the jersey of my hometown football club Traktor Sazi Tabriz.

We went to Ferenc Puskás Stadium by metro. It was three stations from Géza’s home. It’s the biggest stadium in Hungary but because of its old age it will be destroyed and a new one will be built on its place. Ferenc Puskás is undoubtedly the most famous Hungarian in the world. He’s accounted as one of the biggest footballers in the history of football who played for Real Madrid during 1960s and died in 2006. Géza had invited one of his friends to the match too but he or she didn’t appear. Géza sold his ticket in the black market; of course below the real price. On the way toward stadium, most of the fans were wearing or carrying the Hungarian national team's shawls, jerseys or flags. Here and there some Estonian fans could be spotted. Fans had started the slogans from outside the stadium.

We crossed the ticket and body search zone and entered the stadium. The only place in this country in which sexual separation is applied is this place and during body search. Men are searched by men and women by women. With the age of 60 years, Ferenc Puskás Stadium is old enough. National matches will be hosted here until the new stadium is built. At the moment the second floor is closed to the fans because of the probable dangers and they use only the first floor. Important and exciting matches have been played here. Géza has watched some of them live here including 2-2 draw with Italy in 2000.

Ferenc Puskás Stadium

For me who was experiencing the atmosphere of a foreign stadium for the first time and also for Samaneh who was watching a live football match in the stadium for the first time in her life, it was an interesting experience. The weather was cold and we were all shivering a little to partially.

Being among Hungarian football fans and seeing their patriotic feelings was interesting too. I didn't think that like us Iranian, the Europeans were fond of these values. One of my Hungarian friends told me that national feelings is one of the tools politicians use during electoral campaigns and these values are still one of the components of the Hungarians' unity.

Only few days before, Hungary had lost 0-3 to Romania in Bucharest. Géza had watched the match in Bucharest too. Because of this, Hungarian fans were not satisfied of their team and specially the couch. They had started chanting against them before the game. In one side of the stands, noisy Estonian fans were sitting; turning there to blue by Estonian team jerseys. Considering the somehow long distance between Hungary and Estonian, it was interesting to see that number of Estonian fans in the stadium.

Hungary started the match very good and soon scored the goal. Fans forgot the defeat in Romanian soil and started to support the team. On the other side, good news was coming from Istanbul where Turkey was ahead of Romania meaning more chance for Hungary to qualify for the World Cup. Together and loudly, fans were shouting: "Ria, Ria, Hungaria". Hungaria is Hungary's Latin name. Goals increased and increased until Hungary won the game 5-1. We had brought luck for them.

Next day we were surprised by rainy Budapest when we left home early in the morning. Umbrellas in hand and using the book "Lonely Planet" we went directly to the city centre (Deák Ferenc Square). In this trip-unlike the previous ones-both of us had studied as much as possible about Vienna and Budapest in Persian and English both. The above mentioned book and its maps were with me everywhere. Without them I was blind.

The man whose name is on Budapest's central square (DeákFerenc), has been Hungary's minister of justice and has played an important role in establishment of Austro-Hungarian empire in 1867. His name, photos and statues are seen in different parts of the city. We captured the first real image of Budapest at that morning. The city is composed of two parts-Buda and Pest-which are located in east and west of Danube River respectively. They've been independent towns in the past but on 1873 merge and form Budapest. City's main centres are found in Pest. Buda is full of hills and forests but Pest is flat. The city is a little bigger than our Tabriz with a population around 1.7 million. With 10 million population, the whole country is less crowded than Tehran. Budapest is beautiful no doubt; owing half of its beauty to buildings and statues. We Iranians-not used to statues-were surprised by seeing so many beautiful statues and buildings. After having the breakfast in a café near the central metro station, we headed toward Vörösmarty Square which has a statue of this 19th-centrury poet in the middle.

Opposite to poet's statue there are luxury and attractive shops in which we spent half of our time. Inside the shops I was looking for a place to rest and Samaneh was looking for shopping. It was in those shops that I discovered the extraordinary energy women get when shopping.

Vigadó Concert Hall

This part of the city is one of the oldest ones but streets are very nice and modern. Big shops of famous brands are scattered in the area. Buildings are symmetrical and in harmony; not like in Iran in which everyone builds his own building the way he likes without caring about the beauty of the area. In Budapest and again unlike Iran, even in buildings’ colours a harmony can be seen.

One of the main focuses for us Iranian-specially those who live in Iran-during foreign trips is the women’s appearance and the way they wear. It’s unusual at first, we can’t keep a hand on it and our eyes uncontrollably swing right and left. My feeling in Hungary was that although nobody orders people what to wear and there is no restriction in this regard, however women do not appear naked in public. They know about shame and decency too and know how to wear to deserve a woman. Except youth who exaggerate because of their age, Hungarian women in general wear decently.

A little down Vörösmarty Square we reached Danube. Right hand was Széchenyi Bridge and opposite on the other side of the river we could see Royal Palace which was among our targets on next days.

You can see the interest of people of a country in culture on the face of cities. Step by step in Budapest we came across theatres, music halls, statues and museums. In front of each of them I couldn’t help telling Samaneh: “And we think we have a country too”. Budapest is like an open museum. Beautiful buildings and historical monuments are scattered everywhere in the city and Danube is flowing gently and elegantly among these beauties. As it seemed, Danube in Budapest is more important in people’s lives than in Vienna. In Budapest, everything ends with this river. Historical places and city centre are near the river but not in Vienna. The city centre in Vienna is away from Danube and the river is not at the heart of events like in Budapest. Main bridges on Danube in Budapest carry each name of a personality; Széchenyi Bridge (politician), Elisabeth Bridge (queen of Hungary known as Sisi), Margaret Bridge (nun), Petõfi Bridge (poet and revolutionist) and Árpád Bridge (Head of first Hungarian tribes). The biggest and most beautiful one is Széchenyi Bridge which is called Chain Bridge too.

To meet and know our second host in Budapest we headed in the afternoon toward her home. As scheduled we were to be her guest during our last 3 days in Budapest but a day before our arrival in Budapest, she sent an e-mail and said she had changed her mind and liked to host us for all 7 days. We thanked her for so much kindness but because of the promise to Géza we convinced her to bother her only for 3 days. Her home is few metro stations far from Géza’s. Edith is a fifty some year old lady. She’s English teacher and lives alone. She works in a school near her home and accepts private students too. All the rooms in her flat are full of two things; books and teddy bears. We started to know each other cautiously and that short visit became a good foreground for our 3-day stay in her flat. She gave me a Hungarian SIM card to have a better and easier connection with each other. Before that, I was using a borrowed German line by which I only texted as it was so expensive. After meeting at home, Edith took us to some places in the city and gave us useful information about buildings, streets and historical places. It was clear that she knew her city and country well. We separated in the afternoon that day to move to her place in 3 days.

Géza had invited us to a restaurant in the evening with another friend named Viktoria. She was a lively girl who knew a little Turkish. She had learned it from her Turk boyfriend and I talked Turkish with her. The place we had been invited to, was a small restaurant named Halkakas (meaning crested fish) which serves only seafood. Its logo is a funny crested fish. A young and smiling woman named Suzi (shortened of Zsuzsanna) runs the restaurant; checking customers and tables with a pen and paper or trays in her hands. She’s both the waiter and the manager. I and Géza-men of the table-started the meal with Pálinka (Hungarian traditional drink) and continued with catfish and accessories.

There was another program on the way. Géza took us to Margaret Island. This island is like a natural park located in the middle of Danube River. On the way, Géza told us things about music and fountains but we couldn’t understand what he was exactly talking about until we reached there. There is a big pool in the entrance whose fountains throw the water up in the air in beautiful shapes and colours in harmony with the background music.

We had heard of Budapest's beautiful nights. What is meant by this, is fabulous night landscapes of the historical monuments seen from Danube’s bridges with their wonderful illuminations and giving a dream image to the city. That night we watched some live landscapes which we had seen before in the postcards.

Our first destination on next day (12th September 2013) was this Margaret Island. It’s connected to the city by Margaret and Árpád Bridges. We entered the island through Margaret Bridge. Its name was Rabits Island during Medieval Times. Margaret was daughter of a Hungarian king. Her parents had vowed to dedicate her to the monastery inside the island to serve the religion if Hungary were freed from Mongolian invaders. It happens and Margaret spends all her life in this island.

In the very beginning of the island, there is a monument built in 1973 for the 100th anniversary of Buda and Pest unity. We rented bicycles there and drove to the end of the island i.e. Árpád Bridge. The island is about 2.5 km in length.

Apart from trees and thick green area among which squirrels playfully run here and there, there are two swimming pools,  a football pitch, a monastery dated to 13thcentrury, a small zoo, a big 4 star hotel and statues of Hungarian famous figures in the island.

From Margaret Bridge, Hungarian Parliament’s building is seen. Some stone statues on the bridge including a big and beautiful crown draw attention. This crown is the stone version of the Holy Crown or St. Stephen's Crown which is kept in the museum of Hungarian Parliament. Since 12th century, Hungarian kings have officially become the king by putting this crown on their heads.

Real Holy Crown in the museum of the Hungarian parliament-photo from internet

This holy crown is also displayed on the upper part of the Hungarian National Coat of Arms. Hungarian flag and coat of arms was one of the interesting things for me in Budapest as it can be seen nearly everywhere; on Danube bridges, historical monuments and government and non-government buildings.

Also the number of bookshops in Budapest draws the attention; of course good and real bookshops not those like in Iran most of which sell only university exam tests or “Become rich in 15 days” at best. Books do still interest people in Hungary. They read a lot and booksellers sell decent and high-quality books. Other interesting thing in Budapest was statues of naked men and women in public places. Unlike us-Iranians-who are sensitive about nakedness, it seems that Europeans are strangely interested in it; at least it could be seen on their statues. It was more or less the same in Vienna.

Our destination in the 4th day in Budapest was famous Andrássy Boulevard and more famous Heroes Square. "Ter" means square in Hungarian. Andrássy Boulevard is located near Deák Ferenc square up in the city centre. First interesting thing in this street is metro line 1 which starts from the end of this street in Pest and goes along that to Vörösmarty Square in the same part of the city (Pest). This is Budapest's oldest metro line built in 1896. It's the second oldest in the world and like Andrássy Boulevard has been recognized as world heritage by UNESCO. They have still kept its old signs and banisters in the stations.

Today's modern technology was not available at the time of construction of this line. Therefore digging to the very depth of the ground was impossible. The tunnel is only one meter under the street surface. It means trains move in only one meter distance from the asphalt of Andrássy Boulevard. You go 10-15 steps down and the tunnel and trains are there; as simple as this.

Lines 2 and 3 are two main lines of Budapest metro network; first one connecting east to west and the other north to south. In line 3, which flows only in Pest, wagons are big, noisy, completely worn out and reminding of communism era. On the contrary, line 2-the one which took us to the stadium-and its wagons are chic and modern.

Andrássy Boulevard is an art collection from start to end. You should only walk along the boulevard and see. Right and left there are fashion houses, theatres, operas, museums and art academies. Beside these art centres, beautiful statues of prominent figures (mostly war heroes) of the Hungarian history have completed the landscape. Looking at them was delightful but at the same time made us feel petty about our own country. Position of the art and artist in Hungary is somewhere on the top and comparing it with its situation in Iran is upsetting.

Hungarian National Opera

Suddenly among all these art works, a sad grey building appeared in front of us. It does remind of very tragic days and memories in Hungary's contemporary history. It is a museum named "Terror House" which was used by secret police during Hungary's fascist government (1944-1945) and communist government (1949-1989). Thousands of Hungarians were prisoned, tortured and died there with absurd accusations. Pictures of victims on the walls of the Terror House are impressive. Date of most of them is 1958 i.e. two years after the 20-days revolution of 1956 in which Hungarian people raised against USSR satellite government but were suppressed soon by USSR army. Bullet holes of Russian tanks are still visible on the walls of some buildings in Budapest which have been kept symbolically. More than 2500 people were killed in the revolution, thousands fled the country and many were trapped in torture houses of post-revolutionary government.

In the end of Andrássy Boulevard and after about 2.5 km walking we arrived in Heroes Square. This splendid square has been built in 1900. With its clean and nice appearance it’s hard to believe that it’s 100 and some years old. It’s been built at that time for the 1000th anniversary of Hungary’s foundation.

Heroes Square-photo from internet

In the middle of the square and on a tall stone column, there is the statue of Angel Gabriel with Holey Crown on one hand and a cross on the other. At the bottom of the column there are 7 beautiful statues representing leaders of first Hungarian tribes on horses who founded Hungary in the 9th century. Magnificent horse racing competitions called National Gallop are held in this square on September. As our Hungarian friends said, people occupy all around the square to watch the horsemen in their Hungarian traditional outfits. The ceremony is so important that it’s broadcast live on TV.

On Northern side of the square there are 14 statues of Hungary’s prominent figures and politicians in two rows. All of them are really beautiful and impressive.

Right and left of the Heroes Square, two beautiful buildings are seen. One is Museum of Fine Arts and other is Art Hall.

Museum of Fine Arts

Art Hall

Next to the Heroes Square there is a big park called City Park. It’s very big, green and beautiful. During our visit, there was an exhibition in the park of handcrafts and Hungarian traditional foods and drinks with many visitors following each other from stand to stand. Some of the stand owners were wearing traditional Hungarian clothes.

After the park, we were done with that important part of Budapest. By the same old metro we headed toward Edith’s home who had invited us for lunch. Compared to the first meeting our encounter was more friendly. The house was shining of cleanness. She started to offer us food and drink with enthusiasm and energy and was very interested in introducing Hungarian traditional foods to us.

I should confess that what I used to do for my foreign guests was nothing compared to what Edith did for us. Maybe it was the single style. If you don't travel and don’t see the cultures of other nations you all think that we Iranians are the only nation who knows hospitality, Hafez, Sadi and Shahriar are the only poets in the world and only we know what art is about. Before this trip I thought differently about Hungary. Despite working with them, I didn’t take Hungary and its people for serious. I didn't think that such a small and less-known country in Europe could be so rich. Our unknown hosts did their bests for us. During our 11-days trip nothing wrong happened and nobody bothered us.

In the evening we had appointment with Géza again. He wanted to show us a historical castle on Gellért Hill in Buda. Hungarians call it Citadella (castle). This castle has been built by Austrian rulers of Hungary in mid-19th century. The hill is so high that nearly all city can be seen on top of it and what a seeing! Landscapes are extremely beautiful and unique. Danube’s illuminated bridges have a different magnificence and a postcard view.

Royal Palace in Budapest

In the end of the castle and on top of the hill there is a statue called Independence Monument on a tall column. It's the statue of a woman holding a big palm leaf. It's been erected in 1947 as a symbol of Budapest's freedom from Nazi occupation during WWII.

Independence Monument

Going down the Gellért hill, the Elizabeth Bridge on Danube was getting closer and closer.

When we reached the bridge, Independence Monument had got a special attraction in the darkness. Hungarians have used all possibilities to make their country beautiful.

Elizabeth Bridge

Next day on 5th day of our visit to Budapest we moved to Edith's home. First things drawing attention entering her home are extreme cleanness and unbelievably so many teddy bears scattered everywhere in the house from the entrance to living room, bedroom, toilet, study and kitchen. Edith has about 800 teddy bears.

Her study is full of books and pictures and souvenirs from all over the world. To them she added a small portray of Tehran Freedom Square we gave her as present. Edith is a worldly woman who has travelled to forty some countries. Only 18 times she's visited England and still thinks of unseen places. Her next destination may be Iran.

Like Michi in Vienna, Edith offered us her bedroom and gave us her flat’s key from the very first moment. Interests of traveller people are similar to each other. Edith wanted to see our passports. Their appearance and Samaneh’s photo with scarf in her passport were interesting for her. That reminded me of myself in old days; I loved such differences too. As scheduled, Edith wanted to show us the nearby regional fruit market. There is a fruit and vegetable market for each district in Budapest which is very similar to those markets in Iran. We went there by her car in a rainy weather. She took us first to a little standing restaurant that serves different foods to its customers. Her intention was introducing and eating a traditional Hungarian food named Lángos. This fast-food is something like pizza whose dough is made of floor and milk (or water). Sugar or salt is added and it’s fried in the oil. Cream and cheese is rubbed and grated on it and it’s served very hot. The one we tried was very delicious.

Later we came across Lángos bars in other parts of the city too.

After Lángos, we started walking around in the market. Its appearance is like fruit and vegetable markets in Iran. Fruits, vegetables, pickles, meat, egg, yogurt and cheese are sold in the market. According to Edith, all sellers are the manufacturers of their products. They bring them from towns and villages around Budapest and sell them directly to the consumers. Because of this, she is certain about them and genuineness of their products and she always comes here. Hungarians are very proud of their peppers so that it’s become a symbol of their country. Big peppers in green, white and red colours were drawing attentions in the market. Edith uses pepper a lot in her kitchen. Also powder peppers are sold as souvenir in tourist shops in green, white and red packages.

Like us, Hungarians like pickles. Their pickled cucumbers taste a little different from our version and diversity of pickles is not as much as Iran or we didn’t see.

Pickles in Hungary

Pickles in Hungary

There were many types of cheeses in the market. Small pieces of pepper, onion and vegetables could be seen on the cut cubes of cheeses. Like other European countries, many types of cheeses are found in Hungary. They were delicious but after tasting all of them, I came to the conclusion that our own Tabriz cheese is the best in the world!

That day in the afternoon we visited one of Edith’s very close friends-Szilvia-who works in an entertainment resort in the north of Budapest. This complex is called RAMADA which has a 4-star hotel with the same name and a big water park called Aqua World as part of it.

Szilvia is marketing and sales manager in this water park. We met her in the lobby. She was a polite and likeable girl. Despite her young age, she’s highly confident and has a good position in such an important complex. We had gone there well equipped. After meeting Szilvia, we went to the water park and spent a good 1-2 hours in its pool and other facilities.

Szilvia

Our first destination in the 6th day in Budapest was Hungarian Parliament. When we got out of the metro station near the parliament, building’s beauty forced us to stand there and take photo. Taking Samaneh’s photo and seeing the splendour of the building I told her: “this is the genuine parliament!” A man who was taking photo of his friend beside me turned to me and said in Farsi: “Are you Iranian?” We started greeting each other with surprise and happiness. They were members of the Iranian national wrestling team who were taking part in Wrestling World Championships in Budapest; the team who became world champion with ruined condition and empty stomach. Unfortunately our time was too short to be able to go to the competitions’ hall but news of Iranian athletes winning two medals in the first day was heard and talked in the city. Our Hungarian friends congratulated us. Next day on the street two Bulgarian wrestlers congratulated us with shouting “Iran Iran” pointing to the Iranian flag on my back sack and reminding the two medals.

The area in front of the parliament was a mess full of construction materials but photos and banners around the building were reminding the visitors of the splendid ceremonies taken place in this place in near and far past. The building has been completed in 1902. It’s really beautiful from all sides and the view from Danube side is one of the main subjects of touristic post cards.

Totally 700 offices of members of the Hungarian Parliament are located in this beautiful building. Few of them are open to tourists. Tours are done by guides and one of the attractions here is the Crown of St. Stephen i.e. Hungay’s national symbol. As usual, we satisfied ourselves with the outside beauty of the parliament and left the inside ones to others.

Not far from the parliament, there is the oval shaped of Freedom Square (Szabadság tér). On the way from parliament to this square we reached the stature of Nagy Imre the most famous victim of 1956 revolution in Hungary. He was the time prime minister who was arrested after his cabinet fell by Soviet Union’s army and was executed two years later with the  conviction of treasuring Hungary’s People Government.

The first thing seize the attention in the Freedom Square is the beauty of buildings; like everywhere in Budapest.

Apart from beautiful buildings, in the entrance from parliament side, there is a 2-meter high statue of ex-American president Ronal Reagan which is a product of 2011. It’s been erected to respect Reagan for his efforts on the way to end communism in Hungary. When taking photo with his statue, Samaneh asked me to stand in front of him but I said: “It’s not good. He’s been the president of a country” and stood behind him. Exactly behind Ronald Reagan, dome of the Hungarian Parliament is seen.

Close to Raegan’s statue, a monument from communism era grabs attention. It’s been built there to appreciate the Soviet Union Army for releasing Hungary from Nazi Germany’ occupation. Although the Soviet Union’s army occupied Hungary later but they haven’t touched this historical monument.

American embassy, Hungarian Central and National banks are also located in this square. There is a statue of a man in front of the American embassy who was a US army general named Harry Hill Bandholtz. He prevented the occupying Romanian soldiers from looting the Hungarian National Museum in 1919. At the bottom of the statue there is a sentence from the general explaining his great job: “I simply carried out the instruction of my government, as I understood them, as an officer and a gentleman of the United States Army”.

Our visit to Freedom Square came to end. We used the same metro line we had come with to get to an important touristic location in Buda; Castle Hill. Hungarians call it Várhegy. We got down from metro in Moscow Square. Elder people use this name for the square. As a Hungarian friend said, following the fall of communists, revolution reached the names too and most of them were changed including this Moscow Square. Most people don’t like these name changes. My friends were glad that I used the square’s old name.

The Castle Hill is a 1 km long surrounded complex at the height of 170 m above Danube River with many historical monuments from Medieval Times inside it. We entered the Hill from an entrance called Vienna Gate. On the gate’s wall hangs a picture of the castle and its contents.

Old appearance of the buildings, churches and stony pavements take the visitor to the atmosphere of old centuries. However, new residence buildings, restaurants and other symbols of modern life is seen in the area.

After passing the entrance and silent allies, we arrived in the main target where Matthias Church is located. In this place, tourists climb over each other to take photo or see the landscapes. King Matthias held his marriage ceremony in this church in 1474 since which it’s been called after him. More than anything else, rooftop tiles of the church draw the attention. It looks like Gelim (type of Iranian carpet) with its happy colours.

Matthias Church

Matthias Church

In front of the church, there is St. Stephen’s magnificent statue sitting on a horse with full saddle and armour with a cross in his right hand, his famous crown on the head (the one which is now kept in the Hungarian Parliament) and a golden halo around his head. Both St. Stephen and his horse have been put on 4 stony columns with a lion sitting in front of each one as if to protect him. Behind the Matthias Church is seen a terrace-like series of towers viewing Danube which is called Fishermen’s Bastion. It’s been built in 1905 and has 7 towers; each representing one of the 7 tribes who entered the Carpathian region in the 9th century and created Hungary.

Fishermen’s Bastion

From the Castle Hill, views of parliament, Danube River with its bridges and Margaret Island are fabulous.

For the trip and by an advice from Samaneh’s mother, we had made a special Mashhadi food named Ghormeh. The name is Turkish (Qovurma=fried) but people of Mashhad have branded it with their own name. During childhood, my grandmother who was a woman from paradise, following her rural habit, used to fry pieces of meat in summer and store them with its own grease in a big pot. She then took these Ghormes out little by little and made delicious Abgushts (Iranian traditional food).

I bought 2.5 kg meat plus 0.5 kg grease. After cutting the meat into pieces, Samaneh fried them in its grease and that became our reserve food during the trip. It was in fact Samaneh’s suggestion and I accepted with her insist but was really delicious and really helpful! We had it in a small jar in the backsack everywhere. Nothing else was needed. We made sandwiches of Ghormeh and ate them. It was so delicious that there was no need for sauce or any other additive. After meeting Edith, Hungarian peppers were added to our Iranian Ghormeh. On the day of visiting the Castle Hill, we had this delicious food and Edith’s peppers for lunch.

Before the trip, we had read about wine festival held in September in Budapest. It was being held in the Castle Hill on the day and hour of our visit. Because of the entrance fee, we didn’t enter the fair but could see posters outside the festival’s place and read about the stands and possibility of tasting different wines with precondition of this and that. Hungarians are proud of their beers from Hungary’s different regions and of course they are delicious.

The Castle Hill ends with Hungary’s Royal Palace. In the end of our tour of this part of Budapest, accidently we watched the ceremony of changing Royal Palace guards. Dressed in neat uniforms, they were seriously engaged in their own duty while fully surrounded by tourists who thought they were playing roles. Palace guards changed during a completely official ceremony following the whole protocol. I had seen a similar ceremony in Freedom Square of Riga (Latvia). They were both ridiculous for us Iranians. In Iran the military uniform is so unimportant for those who wear it that seeing soldiers or officers smoking cigarette, licking ice cream, not having the military cap on and appearing in public with shoes not polished for a month, is quite normal nowadays. Days ago I saw a soldier in army uniform but with sport shoes instead of army boots.

Slowly we came down the Castle Hill. Little by little Széchenyi Bridge was getting closer and more beautiful. The name of this bridge is after the famous Hungarian politician and author István Széchenyi who lived in the 19th century. Pest could be seen on the other side of the bridge which unlike Buda is flat.

That day in the afternoon, Géza had arranged a picnic program in Margaret Island. Although we had checked out of his home, he was still monitoring us and liked to be with and show us every day a part of Budapest. He said he enjoyed it. Before the picnic, we were to meet another Hungarian friend. I had known David few months before the trip in the Hungarian Embassy Tehran. He was a member of a Hungarian travelling group who were going to China by car and bicycle. Because of being sponsored by the Hungarian government, they were embassy’s guests for few days until they left Iran to Turkmenistan. David has studied Turkish language in the university and we spoke in Turkish. In Budapest, we spent few hours together in Buda and he gave us useful information about the city. Like other Hungarians he knows his country very well. He is in Kazakhstan now for continuing his studies on Turkish languages.

With David

Hungary was occupied by the Ottoman Empire in 1541 that lasted 158 years until 1699. Impacts of this event still remain in this country. There is the tomb of a Turk dervish known as Gül Baba in Buda. This man came to Hungary during the early years of the Ottoman attack. Like Turks, Hungarians call his tomb as Türbe. Another souvenir the Turks have left in Hungary is a lot of Turkish words used today in the Hungarian language like teve (camel), alma (apple), tyúk (hen). Since the early days of working in the Hungarian embassy, Hungarian language was interesting but complicated for me. Imagining that I could easily learn it like other languages I’ve learned by my own methods, I started to learn it but changed my mind very soon. It belongs to the family of Finn-Estonian languages. During the trip to Finland in 2011, I met a German friend who had lived there for 13 years and succeeded finally to learn their language. I asked him: “How is the Finn language? What does it look like?” He said: “like nothing”. For us Iranians, the Hungarian language is something like “nothing”.

For the picnic in Margaret Island, Géza had invited two of his friends too. One was his close colleague and friend István and the other was his Farsi teacher Asef who is an Afghan man. Géza had talked of him a lot before. Asef goes to Hungary 20 years ago for study and stays there since then. However, love of Afghanistan was recognizable among his words. He still goes to Afghanistan once a while. After so many years, he hasn’t learned the Hungarian language completely. He says it’s a difficult language and he has problems. His Afghani Farsi is beautiful and different from ours. Like Géza, István has been in Iran before and is strangely interested in the Iranian culture and people. He has decided to travel to Iran next year with Géza to climb Damavand Mountain. Before that, they will go to Azerbaijan together.

Unlike Iran, excursions and picnics in the nature is not much popular in Hungary. With really big natural parks in Budapest, people do not show interest in sitting together and enjoying the nature. It’s probably one of the side-effects of modernity which has separated people from each other making everyone caring about his own life.

Our 7th day in Budapest started with the breakfast Edith had prepared for us on the table before leaving to school. We couldn’t figure out some parts of her Hungarian breakfast and they seemed strange for us. Hungarian pepper was always in the menu.

The first destination that day was Budapest’s western railway station about which we’d heard a lot and had seen its view from faraway. They call it Nyugati (western). Its reputation is for being built by French Eiffel Company in 1877. The big square in front of the station carries the same name.

Nyugati Train Station

Next to Nyugati Train Station, there is West End shopping centre which is very big, modern and gorgeous. Here you can see stores of world’s all well-known brands created for capturing hearts and minds of people specially women and deactivating their brains. As usual, I was looking for a place to sit and rest and Samaneh was looking for suitably priced “brand” products. To my good luck everything was expensive.

All around the basement floor of this shopping centre there were restaurants offering Thai, Chinese, Turkish, Hungarian, Austrian and Balkan foods. Checking the prices of these foods was enough to learn that food is expensive in Hungary. Among those colourful foods, Samaneh selected a one close to her taste and I selected an unknown one. We gained energy from them and restarted the journey.

Next destination was Budapest’s Great Synagogue which is located near the city centre on Dohány Street. It’s been built in 1859 and with its 3000 capacity is the second biggest Jewish worship house after a counterpart in New York. Next to the synagogue, there is the Jewish Museum which although doesn’t look so old but dates back to early 20th century. Inside this museum, the documents and list of about 400,000 Hungarian Jews who were killed by Nazis during 1944-1945 are stored.

The special Jewish symbol, Star of David is seen in a big size on the iron fences of the museum and synagogue.

Great Synagogue

Apart from this synagogue and museum, another place in Budapest reminding the visitor the disasters imposed upon Jews is Holocaust Memorial Centre which is located near Edith’s home in Pava Street. It’s been inaugurated in 2004; i.e. the 60th anniversary of start of holocaust in Hungary and documents and photos of the massacre of the Hungarian Jews in Auschwitz camp are kept here.

That day in the afternoon Géza was ready again to accompany us in visiting another part of Budapest. We had appointment with him in DeákFerenc Square and he was on time as usual. We were going to see the magnificent Basilica of Saint Stephen located in a square with the same name. It was a short walking until there. One the way, we crossed the square-shaped Elisabeth Square (Erzsébet in Hungarian). There is a small triangle prism in this square made of iron around a tree hundreds of locks locked on its bars. Lover girls and boys have carved their names and date of their love on the locks. What a surprise that, love is admired in a country and in another one like Iran lovers are pursued not to say “I love you”.  In today Iran -land of love poets Hafez and Sadi-even married couples avoid holding their hands in public fearing others around may think they love each other.

We arrived in St. Stephen Square and its cathedral. Before and near the church, a funny big-belly policeman made of bronze in the uniform of army of the Austro-Hungarian Empire is standing. He monitors all passers looking at the direction St. Stephen Basilica is standing with all splendour.

Construction of this cathedral has been finished during early 20th century. It’s open for public but with ticket and it’s said that city’s view from its dome is one of the bests. Cathedral’s main reputation is that the mummified right hand of St. Stephen- Hungary’s first king (1000-1038) - is kept there. As usual, in both sides of its façade beautiful statues are placed.

In the evening Edith had invited Géza to her home. With him, from St. Stephen Square and with noisy wagons of metro line 3 we went to Edith’s home. She’d talked to Géza before on the phone and had found him a clever boy. She wanted to know him in person too. Two fellow-citizens had reached each other. Edith is from Győr too. It was our last hours with Géza as we were to return to Vienna in the morning. We thanked him for all he had done for us in Budapest and said goodbye to him until the next meeting in Iran. Edith would leave home before us in the morning so we said goodbye to her too before going to sleep. She was a wonderful hostess. We experienced the female type of couchsurfing with her which is quite different from the male one. Like a kind elder, she gave us the last recommendations and advices for the rest of the trip and also for the longer trip of our life together.

On 17th September 2013 we went to Budapest Keleti Railway Station to return to Vienna with the same train that brought us to Budapest. Our last internet host was waiting for us in Vienna.

Martin is a 48-year old music teacher who lives alone but isn’t alone. To reply my question on “Have you married? Any child?” he said: “No and Yes”. He’s separated from his partner and the fruits of their non-marriage life together, are two adult sons who are living separately. Like Michi, from our correspondences before the trip Martin seemed a very neat and organized person. He replied all e-mails precisely and on-time and this very characteristic of him gave us a positive and reliable image about him.

Following Martin’s roadmap, to get to his home we took a bus in Vienna’s Meidling railway station. We arrived a little earlier but he was on time. Martin lives in the 7th floor of a new and big apartment near Belgrade Square. Similar to his character, his flat is very special. It has no heating system which means it has been designed in a way that doesn’t need heating. All the walls, floor, ceiling and windows are isolated and glasses are three-layer type. To these, Martin’s more special life-style is added. His electric cooking oven is always off and he never uses it. He has no fridge at home because he doesn’t like to waste energy 24hours a day. There is also no TV at home. In his balcony full of flowers and plants there is a solar oven in which he cooks sometimes. I asked him: “You emphasize so much on preserving nature and saving energy while on the same planet you live in, in a country like Iran or India people who compete each other for reproduction destroy the nature everyday more than before, ruin its resources and nobody cares about these ideas of yours.” He replied: “I take my responsibility and try to introduce my ideas and life style to others as much as possible and don’t care what they do.”

Before the trip and during my investigations about couchsurfing members in Vienna, he was something else. Number of his guests was unbelievable. He showed me his calendar at home in which nearly all nights were booked. He hosted sometimes even several people simultaneously. Before us, a Brazilian family with 5 members was his guest. I thought he was accepting all requests but it was not so. Before accepting or rejecting a request he reads the person’s profile in the website and then decides. He has rejected some requests. I asked him about the reason and motivation of inviting so many people from different countries. He said: “I want to know the people and improve my English.”

Close to his nature-friendly nature, Martin is a kind-hearted and helpful person. On the day of our arrival in his unique flat, he was waiting for a friend to bring him an electric tricycle. Martin uses this vehicle to deliver food to a refugees centre in Vienna. He connects a cart to the tricycle and loads it with foodstuff (in some cases expired ones) of some supermarkets near his home. These supermarkets let him take those extra stuffs for free and deliver them to refugees. The centre he was talking about is in fact the big house of a kind old woman who has accommodated people from different countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. Martin said the lady never says “NO” to refugees. Although population of the centre has reached above its capacity but she doesn’t complain. I and Samaneh tried the electric tricycle and silently drove it in the corridor of Martin’s apartment. The device has a big chargeable battery that Martin charges in his home.

Next day (18th September 2013) we had only one mission and it was visiting Schönbrunn Palace. It’s one of the most famous attractions of Vienna and according to everyone one of the musts. It’s away from the city centre and other historic buildings. We took metro and got down in a station with the same name as of the palace. From there and by 10-20 minutes walking, we arrived in the main gate of the palace.  Schönbrunn Palace was built during late 17th century by order of Austrian Emperor Leopold I as summer residence of Habsburg imperial family. It’s a baroque style palace with 1441 rooms. It’s been witness to important historic events; from signing international treaties to birth of inheritors of the crown and throne. Famous emperor Franz Joseph I (1830-1916) was born and died here. His position in Austria is special. Big posters of him and his famous wife Elisabeth (known as Sisi) hang around the palace with explanations about them. About Sisi, only picture of her youth are seen all over the city. They say after her youth she didn’t let to be painted. Museum of her jewelleries is in the city centre inside Hofburg Palace.

Schönbrunn is a very very vast green area consisting of beautiful big gardens apart from the palace itself. The whole compound is so big that half a day is not enough for visiting that and after the visit you are too tired to have energy for other places. If visiting inside the palace is added, you should spend the whole day. Schönbrunn means beautiful spring and the name really suits the palace, statues, pools, fountains and its gardens. Opposite to the main entrance and in the end of a wide area, the palace stands with extreme magnificence. The whole area is carpeted with tiny white stones.

When we walked around the palace, there appeared a wider and more beautiful area in front of us with water fountains in the end and a big hill with a stony monument on top. Between the palace and hill, there are beautiful, colourful and large flower-beds spread in front of the palace like flamboyant carpets.  In both sides of the flower-beds, big marble statues have been erected on columns in a row.

Gardens in both sides of the palace are magnificent, endless, very clean and well-ordered. It was mildly raining and walking was pleasant inside the gardens.

Like other European countries, in Austria and Hungary animals have safety from human harassment and get close to man fearlessly. It was obvious that they are not animal abusers like us Iranians. In Schönbrunn when tired out of walking we sat on a bench to rest and get energy from our Mashhadi Ghormeh, sparrows gathered around us in a minute. Also in Vienna’s city centre and around fast-food restaurants, pigeons had mingled with people to eat the food crumbs. The birds and customers were both careful to win their own bread without bothering the other.

After satisfying ourselves with walking around the gardens, we headed toward the hill along with other tourists from all over the world. Before the hill on the right hand, there is Schönbrunn’s famous zoo built in 18th century. Opposite to the zoo and at the foot of the hill, there is a big pool with fountains and a series of different marble statues. This part of Schönbrunn is called “Neptune Fountain”.

It takes a lot of energy to climb the hill and its zigzag route to the stony monument on top. More we climbed the image of palace behind us became more beautiful. The hill is 60 meters high. Slowly behind Schönbrunn palace, Vienna city, towers of famous churches and the mountains on the back were starting to appear.

We reached the hilltop beside the stony monument. Its name is Gloriette which has been made in 18th century as symbol of Habsburg dynasty’s power. There is a café inside Gloriette with statues and beautiful marble vases around it. It’s the end of Schönbrunn and visitors turn down after seeing it.

Our 11-day trip was coming to its end. That evening we had the opportunity to talk to Martin again. Like our other hosts, we asked him of his interest to visit Iran. He said: “I don’t like Iranian government” and because he thinks his trip to Iran as a foreigner will be considered as a positive point for the government, he’s not interested in this trip. He had hardly finished his words when Samaneh attacked him by: “Hey, these trips of people like you and seeing the difference between Iranian people and government, have a positive impact on the very people whose country you don’t want to travel to”. Martin was silent when Samaneh was talking. When she finished, he bowed deeply to her in approving the reasoning. We said goodbye to Martin at night too as he would leave home very early in the morning when we were asleep. We were to go to the airport to return home. Our own Iran with all its goods and bads was waiting for us.
