As simple as this

I finally got married. To find my life partner I was due to go to east end of Iran-Khorasan province-and single-handedly propose my beloved girl by getting her father's permission.

Until 2 or 3 months ago I was still standing firm on my “no to marriage” doctrine but it’s apparently not up to you and your will. It finds you on due time.

We didn’t plan it and a simple internet friendship was not to end this way. I met Samaneh for the first time in November 2009 in one of the friendship websites. She was one of tens of girls I met in internet. She lived in Mashhad (eastern Iran) and we mostly chatted and sometimes talked on telephone. In December 2010 she came to Tehran to visit her elder sister who lived in nearby city Karaj and we met each other in the outside for few hours. But this meeting had not a considerable effect on our friendship either and after that, my friendship with her was not so different frommy other female friends until something happened.

To visit my friends Alp and Ercüment, I was traveling to Turkey on July 2011. During our chats, we agreed to go together. When I informed my Turk hosts they answered: “We’ll be happy on your behalf”.

As scheduled, Samaneh came to Tehran and we flied to Istanbul on 11 July 2011. Regardless of her role and impact, it was the best foreign trip of mine ever. Returning from Turkey, neither Samaneh nor me were the same people towards each other.

In Istanbul, in Ercüment’s house and in a scene away from Samaneh he asked me: “Do you have any plan for future with Samaneh?” I smiled because I wished I would know the answer for the question. I said: “Before coming to Istanbul it was only a simple friendship but I feel strange here. There must be something added to your bread and water”. I don’t know how and since when it began. Unwantedly and without introduction I started to have a good feeling towards her and receive similar signals from her; increasing day by day. Samaneh left to Mashhad after returning to Iran but our relationship was not the previous one anymore. We talked on telephone nearly every day and it was clear that it was heading to a nice end. In late September I traveled to Mashhad to see her and spent four days there in Hotel Farid. Apart from her, I could meet three of my old university friends after a long time. Samaneh was with me during all those four days; from arrival in the railway station until departure from airport.

Even after this visit we didn’t talk about marriage but could easily know of our mutual inner feelings.

In December, we had come to the conclusion we were supposed to reach and I needed to go to Mashhad again to introduce myself to Samaneh’s family specially to her father. This is normally called proposal but for me it was only a simple introduction and I didn’t care what my family or Samaneh’s or others thought about it. On 03 January 2011 I traveled alone to Mashahad. Again it’s believed that this kind of introductions or visits should definitly be done with parents-not alone-even if the boy is 37 years old. Parent’s accompanying the boy has apparently several meanings. They can see the girl and her family to decide if they deserve their “child” and also as the marriage is not a bond between two independent people but between two families, therefore two families’ meeting is very important. But I’ve never cared and believed in these Bedouin traditions and thoughts. Questioned by the family and friends as “why is he coming alone?”, Samaneh's excuse was “long distance” or “cold weather” but the main reason was that there was no need for two families’ meeting neither for my parent’s judgment about Samaneh. I informed, however, all my family members about the trip.

On the agreed day at 8 o’clock in the evening, with a bouquet of flowers and my hometown sweets I found myself in Samaneh’s home in Mashhad in front of all her family. She was among them and it was not difficult to spot stress on her face. Their behavior and attitude was very respectful. After exchanging greetings, they left me alone with father and the eldest brother. The brother asked of my job. I said: “I have two jobs and am looking for the third one”. The father looked very experienced and quite skillful in interviewing a young lad who was going to marry her daughter. Surprised at myself and opposite to what I thought about managing such a visit, I was a little embarrassed at first after been surrounded by Samaneh’s father, mother, brothers, sisters and brother-in-law but succeeded to control myself and as Samaneh confirmed later(she disappeared after I handed her the flowers), I presented myself in a good way.

My main opponent in the conversation was her father. His name is Akbar but depending on the relation he’s called “Aghajan” (a traditional title for father meaning dear Sir) or “Haj Agha” (A Sir who has made a pilgrimage to Mecca). I prefer the first one because it’s the same as I used for my own father, reminding of old father-son relations. The second one I never use for anyone. His appearance was that of a typical traditional Iranian man with bald head and a thick moustache. The accent was not similar to Mashhadi but was cute. Although he was extremely respectful but was skillfully talking down on his young company as if to remind him his position. During whole our conversation, I couldn’t read his mind about me. His was very polite and didn’t ask personal questions at all; the ones I don’t like. My German friend Wolfgang says in the similar meeting with his father-in-law, the old man had directly asked him of his income: “How much do you earn?” Following the sensitivity of all men about questions of salary and income, I don’t like to be asked about them and in reply to anyone poking his/her nose in my financial life, I have a typical answer which is a European proverb and I learned from a lady whom I asked about age: “Never ask women about their age and never ask men about their income”.

After about an hour, I thought it was time to go. I asked Samaneh’s father the permission to go. He said: “Where? Stay for dinner.” The invitation was like an order similar to those he gave to his family members that night and seemed quite normal for him. When it was time to renew the teas, turning toward the other side of the room we were sitting in he said in a commanding loud tone: “Bring tea!”

With the way of his invitation it was impolite not to accept; I stayed. They were all nice and kind people. I could hardly believe that I was in Mashhad much far from my hometown to introduce myself to the family of my beloved girl.

After after-dinner tea, it was time to go. Akbar Agha said: “You can overnight here if you like”. I thanked and said: “I stay in a hotel”. But it was not the end of their kindness. Samaneh’s little brother drove me to hotel.

After that, Samaneh’s father started his investigations about me. About a week later he went to Tabriz with his wife and one of the daughters to see my family. They were not strange in my hometown because one of their relatives is married to a man from Tabriz. They’ve married when they were in Tabriz University; the man as lecturer and the woman as student. Two families’ talks were successful and they liked each other but it was not the end of Akbar Agha’s investigation about me.On the way home while his wife and daughter continued their journey to Mashhad he stopped in Tehran to visit me at my home. He came with a close friend who lives in Tehran. They called me only a few hours before and I had time only to clean and order the flat a little. But even before coming to me, he had called my boss in the company to ask about me.

Like our meeting in Mashhad, I couldn't get through to his mind to know what he thought of me. He summarized all his words in a sentence: “Look my boy! I want you no money, no luxury car or house or nothing else. The only thing that is important for me is your personality”.

My brother Naser was insisting me to do similar investigations about Samaneh and her family to avoid probable problems in the future. It means that if for example Samaneh’s brother has been once in jail or is a melancholic or her family is ill-reputed in their region, she should pay the price and I shouldn’t marry her. In our so called rich culture, what someone does is registered not only in his/her own profile but also his/her family’s or even relatives’ and friend’s. For example if Samaneh’s father would discover during his investigations that my brother was drug addicted, even if it was ten years ago, this could mean that I who am completely another independent person would lose the eligibility to marry his daughter.  Therefore in an absurd way we should all be careful about our behavior because the judgment about them impacts not only our own life but also that of our family and tribe.

Like most other ridiculous formulas of Iranian marriages, I don’t believe in doing investigation and unlike mom and Naser I didn't need it. Even if I would learn, in a way, that for example one of Samaneh’s family members had a problem according to society’s accepted standards, it couldn't change my decision in going ahead with the marriage. I did nothing at all about the investigation.

Before meeting her family I had discussed some so called important issues including “Mehrieh” with Samaneh.  Mehrieh is an amount of money to be paid by the groom to the bride at the time of marriage which she can spend as she wishes but nowadays in Iran it’s normally paid when man decides to divorce. I had told her that I don’t believe in this primitive tradition and was very insistent. Fortunately she was looking at the matter more or less in the same way but convincing the family specially her father was an obstacle to be tackled. Only symbolically we ourselves agreed on a rose flower as Mehrieh.

I think Mehrieh is a clear disrespect to the man and woman and to marriage itself. Despite all reasonings, it’s exactly equal to buying a girl as it’s still shamelessly done in some very traditional societies like Afghanistan by paying the agreed amount of money to girl’s father. Its' really interesting and astonishing that even "educated" girls of our own society emphasize firmly on Mehrieh and insist on it as an honour. The ridiculous reasoning of all defenders of Mehrieh is "to consider a financial advantage for the girl in case of getting divorced". If woman really is seeking an independent place in the society for herself equal to men, instead of letting herself to be behaved like a commodity, she should try to be useful and play a role in the society along with men and rely on herself instead of expecting help from father, brother or husband.Again it's a surprising and regrettable reality that still most of Iranian women measure their value by Mehrieh or gold. Thinking of that reminds me of a piece of poetry by Iranian contemporary female poet Parvin Etesami:

Hands and neck of a decent woman

Deserve jewels of knowledge not of colours

Of other agreements with Samaneh was avoiding all silly marriage rules like dowry. We decided to start with what I had at home and then to add to it if needed. We forbade all usual gift games. I informed my parents that "we've decided to marry on 5 February 2011 in Mashhad". My mother said: "Since I should give the bride a good present like gold coin and it's not possible for me at the moment it's better to postpone the ceremony for few months". The more she insisted, the more I resisted and in the end I agreed only with a small amount of cash they were to give to their daughter-in-law. Even if they didn't take part in in the ceremony for avoiding probable"humiliation", I would participate alone. Same things were agreed with Samaneh's side.

Like many other things, gifting has lost its original meaning in today Iran. People give presents to each other for any reason except real love. Relationships have turned to silly role playing theaters. To preserve their imaginary reputation and credit and for different occasions, they do whatever possible to give each other a so called suitable present; sacrificing sometimes even their own vital needs.

When Akbar Agha's investigations about me were over, he showed the green light to his daughter by saying that: "The man you're going to marry is approved by me" and had left the rest to Samaneh. Thus few days before 5 February, my parents came to my home in Tehran to go together to Mashhad. Others in the family were interested to join us in this trip too but fortunately they cancelled the decisions for different reasons.

Samaneh had talked to his father about Mehrieh and had informed him of our decision about it. His first reaction was something like a big shock but later he didn't object which meant "OK". After meeting him in Tabriz, Naser (my brother) told me: "The man I saw will not accept the deal without Mehrieh". I said: "I'll marry and you'll see". In fact I myself didn't expect her father to get along easily with this important issue. This Bedouin tradition has infused into depth of our souls and getting rid of its mischievous affects specially for generations who have grown up with it, is not easy. But I believe for improving the society and humanizing the relations we should drink this bitter syrup soon or late.

On 13th February, my parents and I were on my wedding journey train toward Mashhad. After many years it was a good opportunity to travel with mom and dad. We had pleasant hours together specially because of mom's delightful witty character. She is always so fun to be around. Inside the train she was all saying: "I can’t understand what sort of a marriage this is. There is no Mehriyyeh and dowry, we haven't seen the bride yet and haven't done any investigation and nothing else."

Mom –Dad in Tehran-Mashhad train

Few hours after train's departure I called Samaneh but she didn't pick the phone. I tried several more times but without success. I called her sisters Sara and Zohreh too but they didn't answer either.  “Maman” noticed my worry and said: "Send her a text and tell her: 'if you've changed your mind we can return to Tehran right now' ".

We arrived in Mashhad in the midnight and headed directly toward Samaneh's home. I had decided to book a hotel room but to my reasoning that "we are not relatives yet" Samaneh's father had replied: "We believe we are". The family of my future wife had considered not only a room but a full flat as our accommodation. Akbar Agha has recently built four store eight flats building next to his house and has gathered the entire family together in this building. One of the vacant flats was our residence during 3-days stay in Mashhad.  They did not withhold any kindness to us during our visit. In addition to having a big comfort there we were served breakfast, lunch and dinner by our kind hosts. All family members were very polite and descent and their behavior was highly respectful not only towards us but towards each other.

On4th February 2011,I and Samaneh went to Khosravi Street in Mashahd to buy rings. In Mashhad's freezing snowy afternoon, Samaneh looked at more than 2000 rings to satisfy with a pair and they became our wedding rings. In the big jewelry shop, gold price was changing momentarily on a digital display. We paid for the golds but were not delivered because my ring was to get resized. About one hour later when we returned to get the rings, the price on the screen was 3 dollars higher.

On the eve of our wedding day, mom and dad wrote their dedications to Samaneh on present envelopes mom had bought in Tehran.

On 5th February 2011 at 10 o’clock, we gathered in a marriage registry office in Mashhad to put those historical signatures. From bride’s side, her parents, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law and from my side apart from my parents, two dear university friends from Mashhad attended the ceremony.

The old man in the registry office and his assistant who were father and son (my Mashhadi friend Amir said later) were sitting next to each other. Amir said his wedding had taken place in the same office which was a lucky place for him. He wished the same for me. The registrar asked forID cards for me, Samaneh and three witnesses and started writing the marriage document and filling its pages. I put a piece of paper on the desk in which a rose flower as Mehrieyyeh and divorce right for bride were mentioned to be included in our marriage certificate.

Following the anti-women rules in our society, it seems quite normal for the "second sex" not to have divorce right. There are men who torture the woman by this privilege and make her and her family’s life bitter by refusing to divorce her. Since the very beginning of planning and discussing the marriage, Samaneh was emphasizing on divorce right for herself. I believe not only she but all women should have this right like and equal to men. What's the difference between the two genders in this regard? Why should men be able to withdraw from the relationship whenever they like but women not?

Coming to Mehriyyeh, old man’s assistant asked again: “Is it only a rose flower?” We confirmed.

After filling the documents and forms, it was time to sign. First our fathers, then three witnesses from the audience and finally I and Samaneh signed the documents.

Of my 5 friends from Mashhad, all of whom I acquainted in the university, two of them were not in Mashhad and one of them was busy with his work. But Mehdi and Reza attended the ceremony to witness their ex-classmate marrying a girl from their hometown.

After the signature party, we all were guided to the wedding room in which I and Samaneh took the specified seats for groom and bride. We were surrounded by 3 women, two of them taking a white piece of fabric above our heads and the other one rubbing two pieces of sugars to each other symbolically hoping a sweet life for us.

Registrar started reading sentences in Arabic and then in Persian, the latter more understandable, in a loud voice. He read the terms and conditions of our wedding and asked my confirmation in a formal tone. The answer was “Yes”. Samaneh was asked the same question but only her answer came after three times of being asked and was a little different: “With permission of elders, yes”. According to traditions, a girl’s immediately answering this important question is not polite.

We were husband and wife then. Kisses and offering sweets began and we exchanged rings.

Between the kisses, the old man delivered our wedding document to Samaneh with congratulations and best wishes.

In the evening Samaneh’s father had organized a dinner party in a well-known restaurant in Mashhad to which about 30 guests including Samaneh’s close relatives and friends had been invited. My friends Mehdi and Reza were among the guests; this time with their wives.

After the dinner, the whole group moved to my father-in-law’s house and celebrated the memorable event in an informal atmosphere.

Our engagement lasted only one day because, as planned before, the day after marriage we left Samaneh’s hometown by Mashhad-Tabriz train. I and Samaneh said goodbye to mom and dad in Tehran hoping to see them again in Tabriz for Iranian New Year holidays and they continued their journey toward Tabriz.
